As pretty much every secondary school student knows, TY is a year full of trips and tours and it's important to get the most out of all of them. Continue reading to find out exactly how!
1. Research
Looking up the place you're going to before you go is so helpful. Not only will it let you know what you're getting into, but it means you can plan exactly what you need to bring. Asking people who have been there before also helps to reveal the less glamorous aspects of the trip (the ones the website decides to exclude).
2. Pick the right seat
It may surprise you to find out that where you sit makes or breaks a bus journey, or you may be a pro at positioning. Regardless, I find that the most enjoyable bus journeys are when you sit at the back of the bus.
A cliché I know, but the extra seats (and distance from the teachers) makes prime real estate. however, these seats are often taken by annoying people who sprint for the bus like they're in the Olympics. If this is the case, I recommend sitting in the middle or on the top deck (if there's a double decker).
3. Have bus entertainment
Pinterest is a perfect place to go for inspo in this area, there's tonnes of travel game ideas that you can scroll through to your heart's content. On my last school tour I brought a notebook and a couple of pens and absolutely demolished Ella at 'dots'. Good times :)
4. Be open to talking to new people
TY is a great opportunity to talk to those people that you know to see but for the life of you can't remember their name. Or the people whose names you know, but not much else.
On trips especially the normal rules can go out the door. You can form bonds with people you never talked to before because they forgot their towel and you have an extra big one. Take advantage of this kind of situation, or make the most of being paired with someone you don't know. You may not become besties but you could have good craic.
5. TRY EVERYTHING
This point explains itself. You never know if you never try. Don't knock it till you try it. Give it a whirl. In short, just do it.
I've yet to meet someone who thinks, I should not do more things. So if you're trying to decide if you want to do something, just go for it. I decided last year I'd never jump in a bog again, but on my last school tour I had so much fun in the bog.
Trust me, unless you are physically or mentally incapable of doing something, do it.
So those are my top tips! If you thought they were good, go ahead and share them with a fellow TY student. Also, don't forget to head over to our insta page (@howto_fy) for an instagram exclusive trip checklist.
Until next time,
Gemma
