How To Work That Work Experience (I believe in you!)

Writer's picture: mychaelamychaela

Hey I’m Mychaela, one of the new writers for HTTY and I’m going to tell you how to figure out what you want to do for work experience! One of the scariest and most pressuring things is to think of what you want to do with your life. Don’t worry, this blog is DESIGNED to make the scary things a little less scary!

So you’re going back to school soon and you don’t have any work experience. Your Mam is breathing down your neck, basically begging you to do SOMETHING about it. Maybe she’s given up. Maybe you have too. No need to fret! Here are 6 tips for you to find out what the hell you want to do:

What are you good at?

Whether it be football, music, maybe you’re a dog whisperer, everyone has something they’re good at or something they at least enjoy! People tend to enjoy things they are good at and that is VERY helpful for finding work experience in as you’re more likely to be hired if you show genuine interest in what you’re doing!

What’s local?

It’s always good to look into your local cafe or grocery store. Not too far to travel (unless your local is 40 minutes away. If that’s so, sucks for you mate), there’s a possibility of a summer/part-time job after doing your work experience because you’ll have already been trained, and you’ll get to experience the pain and suffering of dealing with customers!

Who do you know?

Ask everyone. I mean everyone. Y’know that aunt you haven’t seen in about five years? Ask her. That friend you find kind of weird but are too scared to say because they might hurt you? Ask their parents so you don’t have to converse with that strange person (and that question is definitely not specific at all. Also no I definitely don’t have a friend like this… definitely not). You’d be surprised how many people actually have jobs! It’s a bit mad really…

Try something new

Look for things you never thought you’d do. The only musical you’ve ever seen is “High School Musical 3”? (That’s the worst one, oh my God what’s wrong with you?) Apply for the theatre. Apply for the guards, navy, even the place where the horse girls infiltrate. TY is all about finding out who you are and who you want to be. Doing things you’d never think you’d do. That got very inspirational, sorry for being positive…. ew.

Volunteering

This might sound absurd to some of you but yes, you can do volunteering as your work experience. If you’re like me and you’re a little bit of a thrift junkie I’d recommend going to work at a charity shop or if you’re more into animals, you can go volunteer at an animal shelter (don’t do that if you’re into animals though. That’s a little weird and definitely gross. Go get psychological help please and thanks).

As a last resort…

You can always move right up to 5th year. I mean you probably can’t this late in the year but you can always try.

This is a joke.

Please don’t do this.

I hope this was helpful and mildly entertaining or else Ella will fire me. Please don’t let Ella

fire me. (I'm not going to fire her - Ella)

Good luck with who ever is breathing down your neck at home, even if it’s yourself.

Until the next time I’m arsed to write,

Mychaela :)
