Making Work Experience Phone Calls for the First Time!

Writer's picture: DanielDaniel

Hey, I’m a new writer here on the HTTY team, Daniel. Today, I made my first Work Experience phone call today following the advice from Ella’s post "How To Make a Phone Call Without Dying of Embarrassment". Here's my experience!

  1. The first tip from Ella’s post is to have your first sentence ready. You want to start off your phone call sounding professional. The sentence I personally used was “Hey, I would like to make an enquiry about doing TY Work Experience in [name of company]". After that, wait for their answer, don’t be tempted to fill the silence.

  2. Have your contact information at the ready as they will ask for it if they are ready to take you on. This would be your email and phone number.

  3. As well as knowing your contact information, you should know the block of weeks that you are available for Work Experience in that workplace.

  4. Make sure 100% that you have an ever-so-handy pen and paper by your side as you will need it when they give you the information about what they can offer you.

  5. Pay full attention so you can catch everything they’re saying. They will probably tell you if they offer work experience, if they have a program and how you can contact them again.

  6. If they tell you to call another day, email them or come into the workplace, reply with “Thank you, I’ll do that” (even if you won’t) (even though you should if you are still trying to get the work experience)

  7. And if they accept you (Congratulations, we’re so proud of you sweetie!!!!), then they can tell you the details of what you will be doing there and when.

Woop woop, first phone call DONE!

And one last thing, if they don’t give you all the information about what you’ll be doing and when, and you are unsure if they are taking you on or not. You have to keep contacting them, almost nagging them to ensure you get the job.

Thanks for reading and I hope this somehow helps you, Daniel :)
